Impact of Oral Health
What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of Oral health and Heart disease! Two random stuff with no connection? Well you are wrong!
Overall general health of human beings is quite influenced by oral health. Or we could simply say that having bad oral health puts us at a high risk of developing other health problems including but not limited to :
Heart Disease
Osteoporosis
Pregnancy problems
Diabetes
Respiratory Disease
You might be now inclined to believe this to be a recent discovery. But, in truth this study dates back july1998 wherein it was well established that bacteria which cause periodontal disease(periodontal infection) can enter the blood stream and carry the infection to major organs leading to health problems including heart disease which is the leading cause of deaths in the US (Yes! Even more deaths than cancer)
Thereafter, many studies have constantly vouched for the mouth-body connection which indicates “a healthy smile promotes a healthy heart“. Many scientific papers have been published publicly and in dental journals and you can see many new studies doing the rounds on the internet emphasizing the same fact.
Ignoring Oral Health
So now that you know the mouth-body connection, ignoring your oral health might not seem a good idea to you anymore. If you have ignored your oral health for a long time, getting a periodontal evaluation would be a good idea.
You should consider a periodontal evaluation especially if you:
- Have heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis or respiratory disease.
- Planning to conceive a baby.
- Have family members with periodontal disease.
